Albarella is one of those places guests tend to come back to year after year. A private, gated island — only residents and registered guests may enter through the security gate. No day-trippers, no uninvited visitors. The island is well-regulated: cars are strongly de-emphasised in favour of bicycles and golf carts, keeping the roads quiet and the air clean. What you find inside: pristine beaches, a full-size golf course, a tennis centre with 23 courts, horse riding, water sports, children's entertainment, lagoon sunsets, and a pace of life that feels genuinely different from anywhere else in Italy.
Albarella sits in the northern Adriatic lagoon where the Po Delta meets the sea. The island is well-regulated: cars are permitted for access but movement inside is strongly encouraged by bicycle and golf cart. There is a security gate at the entrance — once inside, the island operates on its own unhurried logic. The pace slows down within hours of arrival.
The island is bordered by the Po Delta Nature Park — one of Italy's most significant wetland ecosystems and a UNESCO protected area. Flamingos, herons, and dozens of migratory bird species are visible from the lagoon-facing garden of Villa Albarella. This is not a manufactured resort — it is a genuinely special natural environment that happens to have very good infrastructure.
Pristine Adriatic sandy beaches, lapped by shallow, safe water — ideal for children. Beach loungers and umbrellas available for rent directly on the beach. The sea warms up quickly in June and stays comfortable through September.
An 18-hole golf course set within the island's pine forests and lagoon views. Club rental available. One of the most scenic courses in northern Italy — book tee times in advance during July and August.
The island is made for bicycles. Flat, car-free paths connect the villa to the beaches, restaurants, and sports facilities. Bike rental available on the island. The best way to explore — and how most families spend their mornings.
Sailing lessons and boat hire available from the island's water sports centre. The lagoon offers protected, calm water ideal for beginners. Kayaking, SUP, and pedalo hire also available at the beach.
The island stables offer trail rides through the pine forests and along the lagoon edge. Suitable for all levels including children. One of the more unexpected pleasures of Albarella — the pine forest trails are genuinely beautiful.
Multiple tennis courts bookable directly on the island. Volleyball, football pitch, mini-golf, and a full children's activity programme running throughout the summer season — evenings on the island are lively.
Villa Albarella can arrange a 4-seat golf cart for guests — the preferred way to get around the island. We have special rates for our guests, delivered to the villa before your arrival. Ask us via WhatsApp when you book.
Bicycles are available for rent from several points on the island. Most distances are short enough to walk comfortably, but the golf cart makes the difference when you have beach bags, shopping, or children.
The island has over ten restaurants ranging from casual beach bars to proper sit-down dinners. These are our personal recommendations:

The island is accessible by car only — there is no public transport. The approach is straightforward: drive to the security gate, where your name will be registered in advance. Your car is authorised to enter and park on site at the villa (2 spaces). If you need a private transfer, we can help arrange one — ask us when booking.
Venice makes a perfect day trip from the island — 75 minutes each way by car. Stay on the island in the evenings and explore Venice during the day, without the pressure of a city hotel.
The island is only 45 minutes from Venice by car — making it the ideal base for a two-part Italian holiday. Stay on the island for the pool, beaches, and family time; do Venice as a day trip or pair it with a stay in one of our Venice apartments. Many of our guests book a few nights in Venice first (La Serenissima or Dimora San Lorenzo), then transfer to Albarella for the second part of their trip. We can arrange the private car transfer between the two properties.
The island sits at the edge of the Po Delta Nature Park — a vast wetland reserve that is one of Europe's most important bird habitats and a UNESCO protected site. From the lagoon-facing side of the island, you can watch flamingos, herons, egrets, and dozens of migratory species, especially during the spring and autumn migration seasons. The park can be explored by boat tour from the nearby mainland — ask us for a recommendation for a guided excursion.
